Aeromexico on Friday became the second airline to resume Boeing 737 Max operation since the model’s grounding with a flight from Mexico City to Cancun. The airline, whose fleet includes six 737 Max 8s, next plans gradually to add domestic destinations such as Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Tijuana.
Following the FAA’s November clearance for the Max to return to service, Aeromexico has coordinated with Boeing and the Federal Civil Aviation Agency of Mexico (AFAC) on all the needed procedures and tests to reintroduce the narrowbody, and AeroMexico’s Max pilots have completed their updated training on the type.
“As a pilot and Grupo Aeromexico representative, I am very proud to welcome back into our operations one of the most efficient, modern, less polluting, and safest aircraft in the world,” commented Grupo Aeromexico vice president of flight operations Pablo Aram Aznavurian Roure. “Our pilots, technicians, and all airline employees are ready to fly, and we appreciate the detailed assessments that AFAC has carried out to guarantee the safety and strict compliance with all the requirements.”
Brazil’s Gol on December 9 became the first airline to return the Max to service since its worldwide grounding in March 2019. Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) issued approval for the Max to resume operations on November 25, a week after the FAA lifted its 20-month grounding of the narrowbody.
